At the beginning of hostilities, Germany had one of the powerful and respected armies in the world,
fielding 3.8 million men, second in size only to Russia. Field uniforms were standardized and simplified
as the war progressed. Uniforms were Feldgrau (field gray) and made of high-quality wool gabardine.
The traditional leather spiked pickelhaube helmet was replaced in 1916 by the steel Stahlhelm helmet
which reduced head wound fatalities by nearly 70%. Brickafig’s German WWI infantryman is outfitted
with a period correct canteen, ammo pouches, leather jackboots, a Gewehr 98 Mauser rifle and, for
those late-night raids, a trench mace.
